At some point, most people have undertaken a spring cleaning once the weather warms up and it’s time to fling the windows open wide again. For some reason though, it’s not as common for people to set about preparing the inside of a home for winter. Maybe because we just don’t want to think about the cold weather that comes with it.

Regardless of whether you get excited about sweater weather and pumpkin-flavored everything, it’s a good idea to undertake some fall home preparation while you still have access to warm sunny days and outdoor clotheslines.

The following fall cleaning checklist for bedrooms can help you get started on preparing your home for winter.

Ceiling Fans

Those ceiling fans often work nonstop in the summer, meaning you won’t see all the dust that gathers on the blades until they’re turned off. Wipe down the blades completely during your fall home preparation. In addition, reverse the direction so that the fan is turning clockwise. This will help warmer air — which naturally rises — circulate throughout your bedroom.

Light Fixtures and Lampshades

When the days get shorter, you’re going to need to have the lights and lamps in your bedroom on more often. Cleaning the globes and bulbs can really help brighten your rooms. In addition, it can reduce the amount of dust that’s in your home which is a plus any time of year, but especially in the winter when the home is shut up.

Baseboards, Radiators and Heating Vents

Baseboards are often overlooked during routine housekeeping, as are heating or cooling vents. Make it a point to add these areas to your fall cleaning checklist so you can start off the colder months of the year with a little less dust in your life. Radiators can be wiped down with damp microfiber cloths, while vents can be vacuumed.

Mattresses and Bedding

You’re going to want the bed to be nice and cozy when the temperature drops. After all, what better way to while away a blustery day than reading a book or binging your new favorite show under a fluffy duvet?

Closets, Dressers and Nightstands

When making fall home preparations, you want to remember that you’ll be inside the house a lot more once the weather cools down. Because of this, opening up space through decluttering and organization can really help you beat the seasonal blues.
